Quick answer

The Salthill show is an evening, so it pairs with a daytime trip. Two full-day guided trips leave Galway: one to the Cliffs of Moher and the Burren along the Wild Atlantic Way, one into Connemara and its national park. Check the return time on the booking before you plan the same evening, because a long day can leave little slack.

Why a day trip suits a show

The show happens in the evening and the countryside happens in the day, so the two seldom compete. Galway is a good base for both: Wikipedia calls it the gateway to Connemara and the Gaeltacht. A full-day coach trip fills the hours before a theatre seat, and the show then gives the evening a different texture, from open land to a seated, lit room. The risk is the clock, which is why this guide leans on the booking page for every time.

The Cliffs of Moher and the Burren

Wikipedia places the Cliffs of Moher at the south-western edge of the Burren region in County Clare, on the Atlantic coast, about 14 kilometres long and reaching their highest point just north of O'Brien's Tower. They are described as a signature point on the Wild Atlantic Way, and O'Brien's Tower, built by Sir Cornelius O'Brien in 1835, stands near their midpoint, with wide views along the coast. The Galway trip on the booking page is a full-day guided tour from Galway to the cliffs with stops on the way. Check the stops and the return time on the booking page before you book.

Connemara

Connemara is a region on the Atlantic coast of western County Galway. Wikipedia says it is strongly associated with traditional Irish culture, contains most of the Connacht Gaeltacht, which is the largest Gaeltacht in Ireland, and has mountains, notably the Twelve Pins, peninsulas, coves and small lakes. The day trip described on the booking page passes fishing villages and gives time in Connemara National Park. Its largest settlement is Clifden, Wikipedia says. It is the better pick if you want empty land and the Irish-speaking west.

A sample plan

One workable pattern is to take the day trip, return to the city, rest and eat, then go out to Salthill for the show. It only works if the trip returns with enough slack, which the booking page for each trip describes. A gentler pattern takes the trip one day and the show the next. Either way, book the show first, since its season is the tighter constraint, and fit the trip around it. Leave the evening before a long day free if you can, as an early start after a late show is tiring.

Which day suits which traveller

The cliffs are the more famous stop, and Wikipedia puts their highest point at 214 metres. They suit visitors who want one dramatic view. Connemara suits visitors who want long, quiet landscapes and a sense of the Irish-speaking west. Neither is a performance, and neither promises weather: the Atlantic coast is changeable in summer, so build in margin. Picking one of the two, rather than doing both on consecutive days, leaves your evening for the show.

Fitting the evening around it

Treat the show as the fixed point and book the day trip around it. Take the show on an evening when the calendar has a date, then choose the day trip for the day before or after, not the same day. If you do book both for one date, read the return time on the trip's booking page and the start time on the show's confirmation, and leave slack for traffic, the walk and the dinner you may want to eat first.

Who this isn't for

A long day on a coach will not appeal to everyone, and neither trip suits a tight schedule on the day of the show. They are not a substitute for the show, and the show is not a substitute for the countryside. If your trip is short, choose the one that fits the weather and your energy, and leave the rest.

Frequently asked questions

Is a day trip plus the show in one day realistic?

Possibly. Compare the return time on the trip's booking page with the start time on the show's confirmation, and leave slack.

Which is better, Moher or Connemara?

Moher gives one dramatic cliff view; Connemara gives long, quiet landscapes. Pick by what you want.

Do the trips include the show?

No. Each trip and the show are separate bookings.
